The suppressed insurgency in Niger was not a moment of failure for the ruling military junta. — This was the fourth attempted coup in three years in the Sahel, which only strengthened the power of the leader against whom it was directed. Survive a coup attempt for the Sahel junta — This is not a rescue from death, but a mechanism for strengthening power: each failed attempt gives the ruler grounds for cleaning up rivals and increasing personal dependence on Russia. «African Corps». This cycle is now equally evident in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, making these regimes increasingly resistant to change from within. — Even as their bloodless armies lose the very war against the jihadists they were created to win.

On the night of August 28, young soldiers at base 101 in Niamey opened fire on their own barracks, took hostages and marched toward the presidential palace and the state broadcaster. By Sunday morning, the rebellion had been put down. — Not because the Nigerian army coped with its own forces, but because the Russian «African corps»stationed at the same base, provided loyal troops recapturing the base, «ground and air support»According to the ambassador of Moscow. General Abdurahamane Tiani, who seized power in a 2023 coup, resisted an attempted coup against himself — With the help of a foreign force, which he himself invited to the country after his coup. This is not an isolated case on the verge of failure. This is the fourth time in three years that the Sahel junta has fought off an attack by its own soldiers. — And each time, survival made the ruler not easier, but more difficult to overthrow.

The context of the three regimes

Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso are ruled by juntas that seized power in 2023, 2020-2021, and 2022, respectively; each justified the coup as a quicker route to defeating jihadist insurgencies than the elected governments it succeeded, and each reoriented from French military cooperation to Russian support after coming to power. All three countries withdrew from ECOWAS by early 2025 to form their own confederation. — The alliance of Sahel states was a formal break with the regional order and allowed them to coordinate diplomatically and militarily without facing pressure to restore civilian rule separately.

All three countries have since experienced several coup attempts from their own ranks: Mali — in May 2022, with new purges due to the alleged plot back in October 2025; Ibrahim Traoré in Burkina Faso experienced attempts in September 2023, January 2024, April 2025 and January 2026; Tiani in Niger has now joined them after August 2026. None of these attempts were successful. Each was followed by a purge of the officer corps and a deepening of military ties with Moscow.

Mechanism: cleaning plus patronage

Intuitive perception of the coup attempt — A sign of weakness, a sign that the government is too unstable to trust its own soldiers. If we judge the last three years in the Sahel by this logic, General Tiani in Niger, Ibrahim Traoré in Burkina Faso, and Assimi Goita in Mali should have left already. Instead, all three hold power stronger today than they did when they seized it, and each came to it through the same mechanism: surviving a coup attempt, and then using that survival to strengthen their position.

The mechanism consists of two mutually reinforcing parts:

  • Cleaning. A failed coup gives the junta leader a legally impeccable reason to remove everyone he already suspected, rebuild the chain of command around personal loyalty rather than rank, and elevate loyal units. — presidential guard — over the regular army. Mali's junta carried out another wave of officer firings in October 2025 over an alleged plot in addition to the wave following the 2022 counter-coup. Burkina Faso has passed this cycle four times. — September 2023, January 2024, April 2025 and January 2026 — each time announcing a conspiracy and subsequent arrests. Tiani in Niger is expected to do the same after the events at base 101: analysts at the Egmont Institute note that the upcoming purge will further concentrate power around the presidential guard of Tiani himself. — The unit that quelled the rebellion.
  • Patronage. Each purge widens the trust gap between the ruler and his own army. — This is the difference that the Russian «African corps» Gets a filling fee. In Niger, it stopped being a theory on August 29: units «African Corps»Base 101 did not just provide advice. — They fought, and the ambassador of Moscow said that the rebels were «Neutralized primarily by» This interference. Burkina Faso has about 100 employees «African Corps» They arrived in January 2024 to protect Traore himself, operating from a new base in Lumbila near Ouagadougou.

Every attempted coup doesn’t just eliminate rivals. — It reinforces the ruler’s personal dependence on a foreign power guarantee, which has every incentive to keep him there.

Objection and its limits

A serious objection is that this reads a pattern in the opposite direction: political science studies of regime resilience to coups.«coup-proofing») generally show that one coup attempt increases the likelihood of another, rather than making the regime immune to them. This is true for basic risk. — Repeated attempts mean a wider and more embittered pool of officers who have been purged, arrested or suspended, which cannot be a stable equilibrium forever.
