Bangladesh's Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tariqe Rahman, who won a crushing victory in last week's parliamentary election, was sworn in as the country's first elected prime minister after deadly protests in 2024 that led to the overthrow of the previous government and its head Sheikh Hasina.

A political alliance led by Rahman's party won 212 seats in Jatiya Sangsad (Bangladesh parliament) in Thursday's election, leaving its main rival — Alliance led by «Jamaat-i-Islami» — with 77 seats.

On Tuesday, Rahman took the oath, and the newly elected deputies took the oath of allegiance to their country in the hall for the oath of office of the Parliament building; the ceremony was held by the Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin.

The ceremony was also attended by foreign officials, including Pakistan's foreign minister and speaker of India's parliament.

Who is in the new Cabinet?

Twenty-five full cabinet ministers took the oath during a separate ceremony in Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon. These 25 people overwhelmingly represent the BNP and its closest allies.

Mirza Fahrul Islam Alamgir
Alamgir, who has served as BNP secretary general since 2016, has been elected to parliament from the Thakurgaon-1 constituency in Bangladesh's northwestern district.
Alamgir, 78, was a member of parliament from 2001 to 2006 under the previous BNP government, led by Rachman's late mother, Khaled Zia. During that period, he also served as Minister of State for Agriculture and later as Minister of State for Agriculture. — Civil aviation and tourism.

After the end of that government's term, a provisional government came to power, which ruled the country until the 2008 election. Alamgir ran in this election but did not win. He remained a senior member of the BNP while out of parliament.

Iqbal Hassan Mahmoud Tuku

In 2007, during a military-backed interim government, a special anti-corruption court in Dhaka sentenced Tuka to nine years in prison in a case brought against him by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The ACC accused Tuku of hiding information about assets worth 49.6 million taka (approximately $400,000).

Khalilur Rahman

Dippen Devan
Devan, 62, the leader of the Chakma Buddhists, is expected to be appointed minister for Chittagong Mountain District affairs. Devan won in Rangamati County.

Nitai Roy Choudhuri
Choudhury, the leader of the Hindu community, is widely expected to become minister for culture.

How important are these appointments?

During the election campaign, the BNP pledged to meet the people’s demand for an elected government with real legitimacy. Therefore, experts say ministers and cabinet members can expect significant public scrutiny.
